Fund management

Heather Sherwin PhD, MBA
Heather manages the day-to-day operations of Bioventures. She sources and evaluates deals and works closely with investee companies in developing their strategies. Heather received her PhD from the University of Natal ( Durban ) in 1995. She has five years research and lecturing experience post PhD. After completing her MBA ( University of Cape Town ) Heather joined Gensec Bank as a Strategist in their Internationalisation Division where she was involved in international acquisitions. She has 4 years private equity experience. She was instrumental in setting up Bioventures and raising the Fund.

Paul Miot CA (SA), MBA
Paul is involved in structuring the Bioventures deals and the financial aspects of due diligence and deal evaluation. Paul also works with investee companies ensuring proper accounting systems and corporate governance are put in place. Paul received his MBA from the London Business School . He is Fund Manager of the Real Equity Trust (a private equity fund investing in growth companies) and has more than 6 years experience in private equity and venture capital. He also has experience as a strategy consultant.

Andrew Brooking BA LLB LLM
Andrew is an attorney and a member of the New York Bar. His LLM degree was completed at the University of Notre Dame, USA . He articled at Edward Nathan & Friedland Inc, becoming a commercial partner of the firm in 1992 and working in areas including mergers and acquisitions and banking. He was one of the founders of Corpcapital Corporate Finance (“CCF”) in 1999. He is a founder member and Director of Java Capital and is also a Director of the Bioventures Fund Management company.

Ethics Committee
This Committee operates as an independent body that reports directly to the Bioventures Governing Board. The Ethics Committee consists of the following people:

Prof Johan Hatting: D Phil (Philosophy)
Johan is a professor in the Department of Philosophy University of Stellenbosch specialising in environmental and professional ethics. He has written numerous articles on ethical issues in Biotechnology.

Dr Willem Landman: D Phil (Philosophy), MA (Philosophy and Theology), B Proc
Willem is the CEO of the Ethics Institute of South Africa, an independent Ethics body that examines ethics in the South African medical industry. His specialisation is bio-ethics.

Omphemetse Mooki : MSc, LLB
Omphemetse has an MSc degree in Microbiology and a legal degree. He has written and lectured on legal issues in Biotechnology. He is currently a practicing advocate at the Johannesburg bar.
